Information for Providers
Medical imaging is all we do here at University Medical Imaging, which means your patients’ scans are always our top priority.
Needle-Free Cartilage Assessment
CartiGram is a non-invasive MRI method to assess articular cartilage integrity. This powerful diagnostic tool provides objective information of the cartilage ultrastructure and allows clinicians to visualize collagen fiber degradation without gadolinium injection.
When collagen breaks down, there is increased mobility of water in the cartilage, detected by MRI. CartiGram color mapping shows subtle changes in cartilage composition not visible on gray-scale MR images, and often at earlier stages.
Non-invasive monitoring of the progression of cartilage composition changes can result in more treatment options, reduce the need for knee arthroscopy, and optimize the timing of surgical procedures.
University Medical Imaging offers CartiGram as an optional sequence performed in conjunction with a standard knee MRI scan (upon request). The sequence may result in an additional 4-5 minutes of scan time for your patient.
All of our MRI exams are performed with a 3.0T HD MRI scanner, which is the most powerful available for clinical use. It produces greater image resolution (clarity and detail) than most scanners in the Sacramento area.
